In 2012, he was chosen by Vitor Belfort, a UFC fighter, to be the head grappling coach for Team Vitor on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.

Burns made his UFC debut on July 26, 2014, at UFC on Fox 12, filling in for an injured Viscardi Andrade and fighting promotional newcomer Andreas Stahl. He won the fight via unanimous decision.

His next scheduled fight was against Josh Thomson on March 21, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 62, but Thomson withdrew due to an undisclosed injury. He was replaced by Alex Oliveira. Although Burns appeared to lose the first two rounds, he managed to mount a comeback and submit Oliveira in the third round, earning his second straight Performance of the Night bonus.
