However, at the New York Climate Week in September 2023, Gates sparked controversy by dismissing the idea that planting more trees could resolve the climate crisis, calling it "complete nonsense" and emphasizing that carbon emissions would persist despite such efforts.

During an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, the famed podcaster criticized the Microsoft co-founder for his divisive remarks. Rogan argued that large-scale afforestation efforts have demonstrated significant success in curbing carbon emissions and suggested that this strategy might not align with Gates' interests:

"You have people like Bill Gates saying that planting trees to deal with carbon is ridiculous. How is that ridiculous? They literally turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. It is their food, and that's what powers the whole plant life and the way we have a symbiotic relationship with them. And the more carbon dioxide there is, the greener it is."

He added:

"Which is why it's greener today on Earth than it has been in 100 years. These are all facts that are inconvenient to people who have a very specific, narrow window of how to approach [climate change]."

"Bill Gates, who's on television telling everybody, 'Get the vaccine. You won't get Covid.' And then afterward, that didn't work after he had unloaded all of his stock... It turns out Covid wasn't as bad as we thought it was. Well, you guys are really responsible for a bunch of people taking a medication that was unproven."

He continued:

"You're responsible for all the side effects. You're responsible for all these, and you're responsible for fearmongering, lying, closing down businesses, there ruining economies, changing the political structure of the country."
