Herbert Dean, born on September 30, 1970, is an American professional MMA referee and a former MMA fighter. He began his martial arts journey at the age of nine, exploring various combat disciplines throughout his teens. Dean was involved in training for UFC 1 in 1993, where his teammate Zane Frazier participated.

At UFC 48, he stopped the Frank Mir-Tim Sylvia fight after quickly noticing that the fighter's arm was broken. This saved the fighter from inducing more harm. Dana White, the UFC President, has proclaimed Herb Dean as the best referee ever in the history of the sport. Although he is known for his officiating work, his personal combat career remains relatively under the radar. Dean made his MMA debut on September 9, 2001, securing a win against Randy Halmot at GC 6 – Caged Beasts via chokehold. While everyone makes mistakes, Herb Dean is widely recognized as one of the greatest referees in MMA history.
