Born on October 17, 1981, Holly Holm is a former UFC women’s bantamweight champion and currently ranked No.5 in the division. Apart from MMA, Holm has competed in professional boxing and kickboxing matches. She is the only female fighter to become a world champion in boxing and mixed martial arts.
Holly Holm became the UFC women’s bantamweight champion by defeating Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 via knockout on November 15, 2015. She earned a ‘Performance of the Night’ and ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus for her KO at 0:59 in the second round.
Holly Holm Championship Loss
Holly Holm lost her UFC women’s bantamweight championship to Miesha Tate at UFC 196 via a rear naked choke submission in the fifth round. The fight took place on March 5, 2016, in Las Vegas, United States. The fight started off slow, with both fighters cautiously trying to find their range. Holm managed to land some quick and effective combinations, giving her the edge in the eyes of the judges for the first round despite a lackluster start.
In the second round, the pace of the clash picked up quickly as the challenger executed a successful takedown. Tate capitalized on this by gaining side control and unleashing a barrage of elbows and punches on Holm. This marked the first time Holm had been taken down in her UFC career. Tate continued to pressure Holm on the ground, nearly securing a rear-naked choke, but Holm managed to survive until the end of the round.
Despite Tate's dominance in the second round, Holm showed improved defense in subsequent rounds, thwarting Tate's takedown attempts and landing punches of her own. However, Tate's persistence paid off in the final round when she secured another takedown and successfully applied a standing rear-naked choke, forcing the referee to stop the fight and declaring Tate the new champion.
