Derrick Lewis is an American combat sports athlete who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 7, 1985. He started boxing when he was 17 years old. Lewis was put on probation right after graduating from high school on charges of aggravated assault. After he violated his probation order, Lewis was sentenced to five years in prison; he served three and a half years of the sentence.

Right after coming out of prison, Derrick Lewis explored his prospects in the world of mixed martial arts. He made his professional debut in the sport against Nick Mitchell on April 9, 2010, at the Worldwide Gladiator. Lewis won the fight via TKO in the second round and embarked on his professional MMA journey with a win. He ventured into the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on April 19, 2014, against Jack May at UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne in Orlando, Florida, in the United States of America. Lewis made quick work of May by winning via TKO in the first round of the fight.
