Throughout his professional combat career, he has competed in the welterweight division of the UFC and is considered one of the best fighters in the division. Burns turned professional in MMA in 2012, coming from a pretty accomplished grappling background where he was a multi-time World Jiu-Jitsu Champion. He has picked up six knockout victories and nine wins by submission over the course of his pro career.

One of the most remarkable performances of Burns' career was in 2020 when, by unanimous decision against former champion Tyron Woodley, he placed himself at the top of the contenders in the welterweight division. Eventually, he faced Kamaru Usman for the UFC Welterweight Championship in February 2021 but lost via TKO in the third round. In the following years, he went on to rise with many wins over top fighters like Stephen Thompson and Jorge Masvidal. As of September 2024, Burns holds a 22-7 professional record.
