Power Slap

Power Slap is a professional slap-fighting league founded by the president of the UFC, Dana White. Competitions consist of athletes performing open-handed back-and-forth slaps against opponents until there is a knockout or judges' decision. The show struggled with low ratings, drawing only 250,000 viewers compared to the 800,000-view audience of its lead-in, AEW Dynamite. TBS discontinued the show after one season, but Power Slap continued to host events and released additional seasons on the online video streaming platform, Rumble.

The exotic sport received major publicity for its health risks. Its potential brain injuries received warnings from experts, including neuroscientists Christopher Nowinski and Nikolas Evangelou. Many combat athletes, including boxer Ryan Garcia and UFC fighter Sean O'Malley, condemned the sport for encouraging brain trauma. In response to the criticism, Dana White said there were fewer strikes involved in Power Slap compared to boxing and MMA, and the involvement of participants in Power Slap was of their own free will. The controversy also attracted political scrutiny as U.S. Congress launched an inquiry into the ethicality of the sport. Dr. Bennet Omalu, a leading expert on the topic of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, lashed out at the sport and termed it dangerous and primitive. He warned that participants are at risk of severe brain injury or death, adding that it is irresponsible to promote slapping on television. Meanwhile, Power Slap has gained more steam with the introduction of several well-known streamers and internet influencers at their events. They also signed ex-UFC fighter Paige VanZant to extend their audience reach because of her very active fanbase and media presence.

Why is Chalk used in Power Slap?

In Power Slap, chalk serves both functional and practical purposes. It helps fighters ensure a solid grip and more precise contact during slaps. Additionally, the chalk leaves visible marks, making it easier for referees to confirm if the slap landed within the legal target area and to spot any fouls.
