The Destiny 2 expansions have kept the game alive for seven years (as of 2024), with numerous seasons pushed in between. While an expansion is treated as a blockbuster movie, seasons are slow-burn shows that define the game's content loop in the long run. This is also the reason why an expansion is important for the start of an annual loop, as a good one sets the mood for the remaining year.
This article lists all Destiny 2 expansions in chronological order, including DLCs and mini-expansions that were released outside the major ones.
The release order of all Destiny 2 expansions (2017 to 2024)
1) Base game, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind (2017, 2018)
Destiny 2 was released with the Red War campaign in the base game, which was quickly followed by the Curse of Osiris DLC in the same year. A year later, Warmind introduced players to the Rasputin AI, making him a prominent character in the game's story for years to come.
2) Forsaken (2018)
Destiny 2's first-ever traditional expansion received heaps of praise from everyone in the gaming community. It was also the final project in Bungie and Activision's joint operation. The developers made a bold move to kill off a fan-favorite character, attracting a lot of newer players and veterans to the narrative.
Forsaken brought in new locations and four seasons that lasted for a year. The Last Wish Raid is also a part of the Forsaken expansion, which is still hailed as one of the best Raids in the game's history.
The season names in Forsaken are Outlaw, Forge, Drifter, and Opulence.
This expansion also hosted the first-ever Dungeon in the game, Shattered Throne.
3) Shadowkeep (2019)
Shadowkeep came out as Bungie's first-ever solo studio project. This was also the first time the title moved from Battle.net to Steam, and the base game was free with a paid expansion.
The seasons in Shadowkeep are Undying, Dawn, Worthy, and Arrivals. This expansion brought in a new Raid alongside fresh locations, weapons, Dungeons, and more.
4) Beyond Light (2020, 2021)
Beyond Light came in with a complete overhaul of players' gear pieces and in-game content, as most of the things before this expansion were removed from the title.
Players saw the arrival of a beautiful location named Europa, alongside Raids, gear pieces, and four narrative-heavy seasons that were praised by everyone. This was coupled with additional content one could engage in in the open world.
The four seasons in Beyond Light are Hunt, Chosen, Splicer, and Lost. This expansion also introduced the first Darkness subclass of the game, called Stasis.
Note that the 30th Anniversary patch was released as a minor expansion in the same year as Beyond Light, as Bungie was celebrating its anniversary with several pieces of additional content. Everything from the 30th Anniversary patch is available in the game even today.
5) The Witch Queen (2022)
The Witch Queen concluded the story of Savathun, which was in the making since the Forsaken. This release was loved by everyone and was considered Bungie's best expansion to date. It introduced a great campaign, an impressive Raid, four seasons that kept the story going, and countless armor pieces as well as weapons.
The four seasons in The Witch Queen are Risen, Haunted, Plunder, and Seraph. This expansion also introduced crafting in the game.
6) Lightfall (2023)
The most controversial expansion of Destiny 2 Lightfall came with multiple core changes to the game's mechanics and failed to deliver a decent narrative experience.
However, this release is known for introducing the game's second Darkness subclass, Strand. It remains one of the most powerful subclasses in the game, and purchasing the expansion just for Strand alone is worth every penny. The seasons in Lightfall include Defiance, Deep, Witch, and Wish.
During this expansion's end phase, Bungie released a free minor expansion named "Into the Light," which re-introduced some fan-favorite weapons that were taken away with Beyond Light. The community also got to show their competitive side in PvE for the time-limited "Godslayer" seal in this expansion.
7) The Final Shape (2024)
The final expansion of the game, The Final Shape was released alongside a new seasonal model in the form of Episodes. Players will also see a complete overhaul in armor mods, alongside the return of all gear pieces that were removed in Beyond Light.
The Episodes scheduled for The Final Shape are Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy.
The Final Shape managed to deliver a great narrative experience for the fans, which tied in with the toughest Raid released to date.
