Velonasaur in ARK Survival Ascended Extinction is a new creature you can find in the small desert biome outside the abandoned city on the Extinction map. Once you spot it, you can’t miss it thanks to its cactus-like facial fins and extremely lethal rapid-fire spine attacks. While it can be very useful during combat, taming it is no easy task.
In the guide below, we have shared everything you will need to know to tame the Velonasaur in ARK Survival Ascended Extinction.
How to tame Velonasaur in ARK Survival Ascended Extinction
Found in the desert biome outside the city, the Velonasaur is extremely deadly. When the fins on its head are spread, these dinos unleash a rapid storm of spines at their prey. This "spine shot mode" significantly reduces their mobility but allows them to deal devastating ranged damage. They can also perform a 360-degree "spine burst" attack to defend against threats from all angles.

Once tamed, Velonasaurs become highly versatile mounts, excelling in offensive and defensive roles. Their ability to rapidly fire spines makes them effective in combat, especially when defending a base. They function as living turrets, capable of overwhelming enemies with constant firepower.
To tame a Velonasaur, you will need to knock it out. To do that you’ll need tranq equipment, such as Tranq Arrows, Tranq Darts, or a Longneck Rifle, and protective gear like Flak Armor or shields to mitigate damage. Bolas are useful for immobilizing the creature temporarily. Taming food like Kibble or Raw Mutton is also highly recommended as they can improve the time needed to tame the creature.
Methods to tame the Velonasaur in ARK Survival Ascended Extinction
Shield Strategy
For those taming with a team, this method is the best. One player uses a shield to draw the Velonasaur’s attention, while others place walls or windowed walls around it for cover. The team can then safely tranquilize the creature from behind the walls.
Tanking with another Dino
Use a sturdy mount to absorb the Velonasaur's attacks. Let the Velonasaur attack your dino while you dismount and tranquilize it from a safe distance. Once the Velonasaur begins to flee due to high torpor, follow it and complete the knockout. This method is particularly effective for solo players with a durable mount.
Using natural cover
If you lack advanced gear or tamed dinos, the environment can be your ally. Velonasaur quills cannot penetrate rocks, trees, or other natural obstacles. Lure the Velonasaur to a location with enough cover, then use the environment to stay safe while tranquilizing it.
