Despite the month-long PTS held to test-run Fallout 76 Skyline Valley, many bugs have slipped through the cracks. On the day of release, the biggest glitch is arguably the ability to convert the Pickaxe, a fodder weapon, to several Legendary Modules. This glitch currently breaks the game economy completely, and it will no doubt be fixed within day one, if not within hours.

However, for players who have made it to this article in time, here's how to exploit the glitch and get practically free Legendary Modules from Pickaxes.

Explaining the Glitch

Pickaxes are common rusty weapons found across the world of Fallout 76. While you can swing them around for comically puny amounts of damage - and some comedic effect - their main purpose is to be scrap fodder.

However, on the release day of Fallout 76's Skyline Valley update, scrapping a Pickaxe gives you 2x Legendary Modules for some reason. As the name suggests, Legendary Modules are used primarily to craft Legendary weapons, making them a valuable currency many players hunt.

How to get Pickaxes

It would make sense for Pickaxes to be in mines. Players who have explored the entire map of Appalachia will have a handful of options to go pick up Pickaxes. Here are some areas you can visit:

  • Gauley Mine
  • Glassed Cavern
  • Blackwater Mine

You can find more than five Pickaxe spawn areas in these dungeons, which you can repeat by the usual loot-respawning process.

Reportedly, Bethesda has already disabled world spawns of the Pickaxes in the world to band-aid this glitch before they ship out a hotfix. However, you can still get them to drop from enemies in these areas as a possible loot.

Additionally, Bethesda has temporarily disabled crafting Pickaxes, reducing the extent to which players can abuse the glitch.

Fallout 76: Skyline Valley is a sizeable update with big additions to the base game, including a whole new area to the south of the Appalachia overworld. To learn more about all of the new things and changes, you can read the Skyline Valley patch notes.
