The GOTY 2024 nominee Balatro recently received a PEGI rating of 18+, but the creator of the game wasn't happy with it. In fact, he was so upset that he soon took to X, venting his frustration at how games with actual gambling mechanics have a 3+ rating, while his title got the short end of the stick. Here's what @LocalThunk on X had to say:
"Just to clear it up - I’m way more irked at the 3+ for these games with actual gambling mechanics for children than I am about Balatro having an 18+ rating".
For those who are unaware, Balatro is a rogue-like card game that launched back in February 2024 and soon gained a massive cult following. It was nominated for the 'Game of the Year 2024' category at The Game Awards, and despite being an underdog, received critical acclaim from players.

Balatro creator calls out PEGI over 18+ rating and takes shots at EA Sports FC
Balatro's creator was seemingly upset over his game receiving a PEGI 18+ rating, that too because of "evil playing cards." Following such a development, they took a few shots at EA FC for its 3+ PEGI rating despite containing gambling mechanics, loot boxes, and microtransactions.
Although their original post received some backlash, the creator of the rogue-like card game soon cleared things up, claiming he would accept the 18+ rating if all other games were rated properly.
"If these other games were rated properly I’d happily accept the weirdo 18+. The red logo looks kinda dope".
Apparently, the developers were not as upset with their game receiving an 18+ rating as they were with EA FC's 3+. While a 3+ rating means that the title is appropriate for children, EA's title is infamous for its gambling mechanics, making PEGI's rating system seem absurd.
The devs then added that if other games received similar treatment from PEGI, they would happily accept the 18+ rating. They also claimed that the red logo — the PEGI 18+ logo — fit the game perfectly.
