Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest time in the first free practice of the MotoGP of Assen. He ruled the TT Assen Circuit ahead of Repsol Honda teammates Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner. With only a few tenths of a second between them, it was not easy for the Yamaha rider to stay ahead. Stoner also believed he can go quicker as he was stuck behind his teammate for a long time. Eventually there was no more than two hundredths between them.
Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies seems to gain some of his old form back and set the fourth best time. Nicky Hayden came in behind him after just barely staying ahead of Alvaro Bautista. Hector Barbera set the seventh best time and slowly seems to recover from his disappointment in Great Britain. The top ten was completed by Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow. The latter one is still recovering from his fractured ankle.
The first practice of the TT of Assen was rather quiet and no accidents or serious errors have occurred.
