Dani Pedrosa led the first free practice of the MotoGP of Germany at the Sachsenring. He stayed ahead of Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo with a time of 1:22.357. Though the Repsol Honda duo was well on pace, Jorge Lorenzo proved a strong competitor.
The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team also had a good start to the weekend as Andrea Dovizioso and teammate Cal Crutchlow enjoyed a good run and finished fourth and fifth respectively. Hector Barbera came in behind them and was closely followed by Nicky Hayden. The top ten was completed by Alvaro Bautista, Stefan Bradl and Ben Spies.
An unusual crash appeared in the pit lane when Mattia Pasini fell on his head when avoiding a mechanic. He was taken to the local hospital for medical checks. During the session, only one incident took place when Aleix Espargaro crashed in turn 10.
