RFK Racing is rumored to expand to a three-car team in the NASCAR Cup Series for the 2025 season. Although no official announcement has been made, co-owner Brad Keselowski has suggested that the team may have some news to share in the near future. If the expansion takes place, the team's primary sponsor, Kroger, could potentially support all three cars.
Previously known as Roush Fenway Racing, RFK once operated a five-car team. However, it currently runs two full-time cars, with Keselowski in the No. 6 and Chris Buescher in the No. 17. The team has been enjoying success, securing four victories since the beginning of 2023.
It is unclear whether RFK will buy or rent a charter, but the new third team will not run as an open car because it would be too expensive. Here are three drivers who could be considered for RFK's possible third charter.
Ryan Preece
According to the Athletic, Ryan Preece is the leading contender to fill the potential third car at RFK Racing for the 2025 season.
Preece currently drives the No. 41 car for Stewart-Haas Racing. He is looking for a new ride for the next season as Stewart-Haas Racing is ceasing operations at the end of 2024. The 33-year-old has raced in the Cup Series for 6 years with no wins and the Xfinity Series for 7 years with 2 wins.
Preece had won the Whelen Modified Tour championship in 2013 and has previously worked with Kroger. He also competed in what is now the ARCA Menards Series East and the ARCA Menards Series West.
RFK's part-time driver: David Ragan
Another possible driver for RFK's third charter is David Ragan. The Georgia native has had a long career in NASCAR and also races part-time in the No. 60 Ford Mustang Dark for RFK Racing. Ragan has won two Cup Series races and is familiar with RFK Racing. He also works as a NASCAR analyst on TV.
Ragan joined the Sprint Cup Series in 2007, replacing Mark Martin in the No. 6 car for Roush Fenway Racing. He achieved 30 top-10 finishes between 2007 and 2011. He won his first race, the Coke Zero 400, at Daytona in 2011, while his second victory came at Talladega in 2013.
Cam Waters
Cam Waters also races part-time for RFK Racing in the No. 60 Ford Mustang. The 30-year-old Australian driver competes in the Supercars Championship, driving the No. 6 Ford Mustang for Tickford Racing. His experience in both series makes him an interesting option for a full-time spot.
Waters is also the youngest ever driver to race in the 1,000-kilometre touring car race, Bathurst 1000, in New South Wales, Australia.
