NASCAR has witnessed a trend of new drivers winning the Cup Series championship in recent years. While some drivers dominated the standings a few seasons ago, the introduction of the playoff system has created a more competitive landscape.
With the ever-increasing competition in NASCAR, novice drivers face new challenges and intense racing incidents. While some struggle to make the top 16 and compete for the championship, others have shown promise and potential. The current grid features several young drivers who hold the potential to be champions of the future. Some have yet to prove themselves or haven't had the right opportunity to showcase their skills.
Here is a list of drivers who could potentially be the new face of the NASCAR Cup Series championship in the future.
#3 Ty Gibbs (NASCAR Cup Series debut - 2022)
Filling in for an injured Kurt Busch, Ty Gibbs made his Cup Series debut in 2022 at Pocono, finishing in 16th place. Joe Gibbs Racing was quick to sign him for the 2023 season, and he continues to compete in the #54 Toyota. He captured multiple top-10 and top-5 finishes during that season, and he has maintained his form this season as well. He got as close as P2 at Darlington and has remained competitive. With just one race left at Darlington, he currently appears to be locked into the 2024 NASCAR Playoffs based on points.
His strong performances in just his second full-time season suggest that he could be a future championship contender. With the right opportunities, he might achieve that goal in the coming years.
#2 Tyler Reddick (NASCAR Cup Series debut - 2019)
Tyler Reddick made his full-time Cup Series debut with Richard Childress Racin in 2020 after running two races for the team in 2019. Despite qualifying for the playoffs twice, his first three seasons with RCR were not particularly successful. However, his move to 23XI Racing in 2023 has put him in a stronger position.
Tyler Reddick had a competitive season in 2023, finishing sixth in the standings This season, he has already won two races (at Talladega and Michigan) and locked himself into the playoffs. He seems to have the potential to become a future champion.
#1 Shane van Gisbergen (NASCAR Cup Series debut - 2023)
Shane van Gisbergen is set to make his full-time debut in the championship in 2025 with Trackhouse Racing. Despite not having yet raced full-time, he has already generated significant buzz as a promising future star in the sport. His experience in Touring Cars has provided him with a strong foundation on road courses.
SVG won his debut race at Chicago Street Circuit with Trackhouse in 2023. He is currently running in his rookie Xfinity Series season for Kaulig Racing and has been dominating on road courses, winning three races.
His full-time entry in the championship next season will undoubtedly pose a formidable challenge for other drivers in the Cup Series.
