Hendrick Motorsports has cemented its reputation as a powerhouse in NASCAR, consistently showcasing some of the sport’s most talented and competitive drivers. Their dominance on the track has brought both unparalleled success and fierce rivalries, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the sport.
Founded in 1984, HMS is one of NASCAR’s most decorated teams, boasting 14 Cup Series championships and 312 wins in the premier division. Co-owned by four-time champion Jeff Gordon, the team fields four Cup Series cars, two driven by former champions.
One of the former champions in the current lineup, Chase Elliott, had once gotten into a heated exchange with former Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick. Let's discuss that incident, along with two more on-track altercations involving HMS drivers.
3 times Hendrick Motorsports drivers fought with their rivals on track
#3 Jeff Gordon vs. Clint Bowyer (2012)
Four-time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer were involved in one of the most historical moments of the sport. In the 2012 AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix Raceway, Gordon was piloting the #24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports while Bowyer was driving the #15 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing. In the final laps of the race, Bowyer got into the back of the #24 Chevy which sent Gordon into the wall.
Gordon, frustrated, wiggled his way back on the track and door-slammed into Clint Bowyer's Toyota, ending the race for both drivers.
After the race ended, Bowyer's crew pounced on Gordon and a brawl ensued between both teams. Meanwhile, the #15 driver sprinted towards Gordon who was safely moved to his hauler before the situation de-escalated. Joey Logano's race also ended at the same time as Bowyer and Gordon as he got caught in the crossfire.
#2 Jeff Gordon vs. Brad Keselowski (2014)
Two years after his incident with Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon was involved in a brawl with former Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski. However, Kevin Harvick also had a small yet defining role to play.
Gordon and Keselowski were competing in the 2014 AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Following a race restart, Keselowski easily passed Gordon, however, while doing so, he made contact with Gordon's #24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy and punctured a tire. This made Gordon lose out on a chunk of points after the race ended.
After the race ended, Keselowski and Gordon's crew were in a heated exchange when Gordon made a move towards his rival. While both drivers were having a furious exchange, Kevin Harvick pushed Keselowski toward Gordon and a brawl ensued. Moreover, Keselowski finished 3rd in the race, which added fuel to the fire.
#1 Chase Elliott vs. Kevin Harvick (2021)
Former Cup Series champions Chase Elliott and Kevin Harvick got into a tiff after the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Hendrick Motorsports driver Elliott, who was the defending champion that year, was forced to pit on lap 464 after contact with Harvick led to a punctured tire. As Elliott drove his #9 Chevrolet back on the track, he got into the side of Harvick's #4 Ford, which was running in P1. The contact from the #9 Chevy slowed Harvick down, allowing Elliott's teammate Kyle Larson to drive down victory lane.
As the race ended, Elliott and Harvick got into an intense argument which led to a few shoves, however, NASCAR officials intervened in good time.
Moreover, after their altercation, Kevin Harvick labeled the move from Elliott as 'chicken shit' and a 'temper tantrum'.
