NASCAR has been home to many drivers in history. For some, it was home in real terms as their generations raced in the sport, sometimes at the same time as well.
Over the last seven decades of the sport's existence, there have been many father-and-son duos who have competed on the track. One such achievement is grabbing the pole position in the season-opening Daytona 500 at the International Speedway.
The Daytona 500 is one of the most celebrated and important races in the sport, marking the start of the Cup Series season. The qualifying is different from what other races observe. Single-lap runs decide the front-row starters for the race, and the rest of the grid takes part in two "Duels" battles. These ultimately set the grid for the main 500-mile race.
Many brilliant racers have claimed pole position in the esteemed race. Some of these racers are related to each other as father and son. So let us take a look at a few of those dad-and-son duos who have claimed pole at Daytona.
Dad-and-son duos who have claimed pole position at the NASCAR Daytona 500
NASCAR has witnessed drivers who have raced under the same family name. Here is a list of some who managed to claim pole position at the Daytona 500:
#1 Bill Elliott and Chase Elliott
Bill Elliott claimed his first Daytona 500 pole in 1985 and continued to do so for three consecutive years. He also managed to win the race in 1985 and 1987. His son Chase made his full-time Cup Series debut in 2016 and put himself at the pole position. At the time, he was the youngest Daytona pole-sitter in the sport's history. In the following season, he qualified at pole again.
#2 Bobby Allison and Davey Allison
Both Bobby and Davey won the pole position at the esteemed race only once in their careers and made it to this list. The former did it in 1981, racing in the Pontiac. At the time, restrictor plates were not used, which helped him grab the pole at a whopping 194.624 mph (313.217 km/h). A decade later, his son had the same fortune, only with a much faster Ford. Despite a 29/32 inch restrictor plate, Davey Allison grabbed pole position at 195.955 mph (315.359 km/h).
#3 Richard Petty and Kyle Petty
Richard Petty is one of the most celebrated names in the history of NASCAR. He is one of the most successful drivers in the sport's history. However, he too scored pole position at the Daytona 500 only once, back in 1966. While his son Kyle Petty was not as successful in the Cup Series, he scored the pole position in 1993.
#4 Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
The Earnhardts have a long history in NASCAR. Both Earnhardt and his son Dale Jr. competed together in many races after his debut in 1999. Although both of them were very competitive in their careers, they only scored pole positions at Daytona 500 once each. Earnhardt Sr. did it in 1996, meanwhile, his son achieved the same in 2011.
