The Busch brothers, Kurt and Kyle Busch, are two of the most well-known brothers in the history of NASCAR. However, new fans to the sport might think there's a connection between them and Busch beer, a beer brand by Anheuser-Busch.
So, is there a relation between the beer brand and the iconic NASCAR brothers? Let's take a look.
The Busch brothers have no connection to Busch beer
Despite the same name, there's no relation between the NASCAR Busch brothers and Busch beer. In fact, Kurt, the older brother, used to be sponsored by Miller Lite, a rival brand to Busch beer, when he drove for Team Penske from 2006-2010.
Busch beer was introduced in 1955 by Anheuser-Busch and has since become one of the most popular beer brands in the United States. Busch Light is the official beer sponsor of NASCAR and is the official sponsor of the Cup Series Pole Award. The beer brand was a long-time primary sponsor on Kevin Harvick's #4 Stewart-Haas Racing car from 2016 until his retirement in 2023. Busch Light now sponsors Ross Chastain's #1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet in the Cup Series.
The Busch brothers, meanwhile, are both former Cup Series champions. Kurt got his start in the Cup Series behind the wheel of the #97 car owned by Jack Roush. He won four races in both 2002 and 2003. The following year, Busch won three races and captured the 2004 Cup Series championship in the circuit's first season under the playoffs format. Busch spent one more season at Roush Racing before moving to Team Penske in 2006.
Busch won 10 races with Team Penske from 2006-2011, finishing a best of fourth in the final standings in 2009. He spent seasons at Phoenix Racing in 2012 and Furniture Row Racing in 2013, but failed to win races in either year. Busch then moved to Stewart-Haas Racing, where he drove the #41 car from 2014-2018, winning six races with the team. Then, Busch partnered with Chip Ganassi Racing and raced the #1 car for three seasons, capturing one victory in all three. He spent one year driving the #45 car for 23XI Racing before suffering a career-ending injury in a crash at the Pocono Raceway.
Kyle, meanwhile, burst onto the Cup Series scene in 2005 driving the #5 car for Hendrick Motorsports, winning four races for the organization in three years. The younger Busch spent the bulk of his Cup career behind the wheel of the #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, where he drove from 2008-2022. Busch won two championships in 2015 and 2019 and amassed 56 wins.
In 2023, Busch joined Richard Childress Racing where he currently drives the #8 car. Busch won three races in 2023. Yet, he failed to win a race in 2024 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
