Three-time Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip and the two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip are indeed brothers. The duo, along with three siblings Connie, Carolyn, and Bobby are the five children of Leroy and Margaret Waltrip.
Born in 1947, 77-year-old Darrell Waltrip is regarded as one of the most successful NASCAR drivers. The Hall of Famer has been named in both NASCAR's 50 Greatest and 75 Greatest drivers list. In a career spanning over three decades, Darrell emerged victorious in 84 races, clinched 59 poles, and finished 390 times in the top 10 in the Cup Series. This has placed him in fifth position in NASCAR's all-time winning list.
Following in his elder brother's footsteps, the 1963-born Michael Waltrip joined NASCAR as a stock car racer. Debuting in one of the crown jewel races of NASCAR, the legendary Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he went on to win four races and finish 133 races in the top 10 in the Cup Series. Apart from NASCAR, Michael also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2011.
Both Darrell and Michael have also worked as broadcasters with FOX Sports. Apart from being a racer, the latter was also a team owner of the now-defunct Michael Waltrip Racing team and the owner of the Michael Waltrip Brewing Co. based out of Phoenix.
"He was my best ally and always has been" - When the three-time Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip called Rick Hendrick his greatest friend
Three-time Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip and Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick are two of the most renowned personalities in NASCAR. Waltrip once called Hendrick his greatest friend.
The 77-year-old Kentucky-born racer drove for HMS from 1987 to 1990. Despite being a driver of the team for just four seasons, Waltrip became close to Hendrick. During an interview in 2017, Waltrip spoke highly of Hendrick.
"If somebody said, ‘You can make one call, you’ve got one shot here, so better make it a good one,’ I’d always call Rick. I’ve never had a greater friend," he said.
"The car and the people that he surrounded me with, it was just everything that I could ever ask for. He told me, ‘Look, I think you’d be a lot better to stay here where you are. I think we can do a lot more for you. But if that’s what you want to do, I’ll help you any way I can. And he did. He was my best ally and always has been. I’ve never had anybody in my life, across the board, that I could call and say, ‘I need help.’ And it’s, ‘Buddy, help’s on the way'," Darrell Waltrip added.
Both Waltrip and Hendrick are also a part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
