For someone who has been following the thrilling sport of NASCAR since the 1970s, it's impossible to not know who William Caleb Yarborough, better known as Cale Yarborough, is. For a long time, his feat of acquiring three championships over three consecutive years remained unequalled. It was only in 2008 that Jeff Gordon won his third straight championship and tied with the veteran racer.
From 1976 to 1978, he won a total of 28 races. He won the Daytona 500 four times, a number that is second to only Richard Petty, who has seven wins in the coveted event. As a stock car driver for over three decades, Yarborough amassed 83 victories, which ranks third of all-time, and 69 poles, which ranks third all-time.
Needless to say, he was inducted into the 1988 edition of “NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers” and was also conferred the prestigious title of NASCAR Hall of Famer in 2012. Yarborough breathed his last at the ripe age of 84.
