Dale Jarrett, son of two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Ned Jarrett, is an American former stock car racing driver who competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1984 to 2008. Over his 24-year career in the series, he participated in 668 races, securing 32 victories, 16 pole positions, and 260 top-10 finishes.
His most significant achievement was winning the 1999 Cup Series championship, making him and his father the second father-son duo to win NASCAR Cup Series championships.
Dale Jarrett major sponsors
Jarrett's initial sponsorships in racing began in 1984 during his time in the Busch Grand National Series, now known as the NASCAR Xfinity Series. His sponsors at that time included Econo Lodge, Valvoline, and Budweiser.
Jarrett's first major sponsorship in the NASCAR Cup Series came when he joined the Joe Gibbs Racing team in the 1992 season, with Interstate Batteries sponsoring him. During his three years racing the No. 18 Chevrolet, sponsored by Interstate Batteries, Jarrett won two races, including the prestigious Daytona 500.
In 1995, Dale moved to Robert Yates Racing and was given the No. 28 Ford, sponsored by Havoline, a motor oil brand produced by Chevron. The No. 28 Ford was originally supposed to be raced by Ernie Irvan, but due to injuries he sustained in the prior season, the car was assigned to Jarrett. When Irvan made his comeback the following season in 1996, Jarrett vacated the No. 28 Ford, thereby also losing the Havoline sponsorship.
Before the start of the season, Yates promoted the second car, No. 88 Ford, which had primarily been raced part-time. The No. 88 car received sponsorship from Ford Quality Care and Ford Credit, providing Jarrett with a ride for the 1996 season and sponsorship. The season brought tremendous success for Jarrett as he won the opening race at the Daytona 500 and three more races that season, finishing third in the championship.
The sponsorship from Ford Quality Care and Ford Credit continued until Dale’s NASCAR Cup Series championship-winning season in 1999, bringing significant attention to Ford's divisions.
After a dismal 2000 Cup Series season, in which he won only one race, the Daytona 500, Ford removed its Quality Care service division as the primary sponsor for the following 2001 season but provided the Ford Credit sponsorship. As a result, United Parcel Service (UPS) was signed as the primary sponsor for Jarrett’s No. 88 Ford. The decision to sponsor Jarrett proved fruitful in the first season of the deal, as he won four races and finished fifth in the championship.
Even though Jarrett's performance began to decline significantly starting in 2002, with only three wins over the next six years, UPS remained a strong supporter. They continued to sponsor him when he joined Michael Waltrip Racing in 2007 and stayed with him until his retirement in 2008.
