Davey Allison was an American stock car driver who competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1985 until his untimely death in a helicopter crash in 1993.
Following in his father's footsteps, Bobby Allison, Davey Allison emerged as a fierce competitor in his own right. Despite his short-lived racing career, he achieved significant success, winning 19 races, securing 14 pole positions, and earning 92 top-10 finishes in 191 NASCAR Cup Series races.
Davey Allison NASCAR Cup Series wins
Davey achieved his first Cup Series victory at the Winston 500 at the legendary Talladega Superspeedway in 1987. He dominated the race by leading 101 laps before it was called off due to impending darkness, following a lengthy red flag period caused by an earlier accident.
Just 28 days later, following his victory at Talladega, Davey won the Budweiser 500 at Dover International Speedway, making him the only rookie at that time to secure two victories in Cup Series races in a single season. Hence, due to these wins, he was crowned the 1987 NASCAR Rookie of the Season.
During the 1988 season, Davey experienced personal challenges, with his father Bobby's severe crash at Pocono International Speedway and his divorce from wife Deborah. Additionally, there were issues with car reliability. Despite these obstacles, Davey emerged victorious in two races during the season at Michigan International Speedway and Richmond International Raceway.
At the beginning of the 1989 season, Davey faced some setbacks as his racing results didn't meet his high standards. However, he silenced his critics by winning two major races, the Winston 500 at Talladega and the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. However, Davey again encountered lackluster results in the following races and did not win any more races in the season.
In 1990, Davey's performance mirrored that of the 1989 season. He secured victories only twice, both at Bristol Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The 1991 season was a breakthrough season for Davey, marked by his pole position in the esteemed Daytona 500, although he didn't clinch the win. His first victory of the season came at the renowned Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He further secured wins at Sears Point Raceway, Michigan International Speedway, North Carolina Speedway, and Phoenix Raceway. With a total of five victories and 16 top-ten finishes, Davey achieved a commendable third-place finish in the championship standings.
In 1992, Davey had an impressive start to the season, winning the prestigious Daytona 500 race and then securing another victory at Talladega, bringing his total wins at Talladega to three. He also won races at North Wilkesboro Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, and Phoenix Raceway, totaling five victories and 17 top-10 finishes for the season. Due to these results, Davey finished third in the tightly contested championship which was won by Alan Kulwicki. He won his final race in the NASCAR Cup Series championship at the Richmond Raceway.
