Justin Allgaier once expressed his displeasure when AJ Allmendinger in the closing laps of the 2020 Xfinity race overshot and hit the rear of Allgaier's Chevy, throwing him out of the top-five contention.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the 3.61-mile road course at Daytona International Speedway hosted the UNOH 188 instead of the Watkins Glen International in 2020. After a winless season, JR Motorsports driver Allgaier was looking for a solid finish at the road course until a final stage misfortune struck the #7 Chevy driver, due to the on-track contact by the Kaulig Racing driver Allmendinger.
While the veteran NASCAR drivers got involved in a post-race confrontation, Allmendinger admitted to his unintentional fault of spinning Allgaier in the closing laps and said:
"I mean, he should be mad. That’s my fault,” Allmendinger told NBC Sports. "It wasn’t anything intentional, but that was my fault. I got in there trying to get under [Andy] Lally, and honestly I didn’t even drive it in that hard. I had the Lally pass done, and as soon as I touched the brake pedal, it started wheel-hopping, and as soon as it did, I was trying to clear out of the way, like I was trying to turn right to get away from the #7 and miss him. I got into him, so he should be mad, and I apologized to his race team." [1:48]
"He says I’ve wrecked him a lot in the past. I’m not really sure of that. If that’s the case, I’m sorry," added Allmendinger.
As a result of this contact, #16 Chevy driver Allmedniger, who was running part-time, finished fourth. Meanwhile, the Xfinity Series' Most Popular Allgaier was rounded up with a ninth-place finish.
"He just made a dumb, dumb decision" - Justin Allgaier shared his frustration after missing out on the contention to win
The 2020 Daytona road course race was the 19th race of the season, and frustrated Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s ace driver Justin Allgaier expressed his displeasure with the contact with AJ Allmendinger and reflected on that season's performance.
In the post-race interaction at the 2020 UNOH 188 race, Allgaier claimed it was not the first time Allmendinger had wrecked him. He said:
"Getting wrecked, plain and simple. He just made a dumb, dumb decision. Obviously I’ve not seen a replay, but it’s pretty easy to tell what happened. I don’t know if we could’ve held him off at the end of the race there, but he just drove in there and cleaned me out." [0:57]
"2020 has been just like that right there, and I’m over it,” he said. “It’s not the first time AJ’s wrecked me, and it’s just hard when the same guy wrecks you over and over again," added Allgaier.
Nevertheless, the Illinois native Allgaier bounced back with a win the next weekend at Dover International Speedway and ended the 2020 season at the runner-up spot in the final driver standings.
