Joe Gibbs is undoubtedly among the most successful personalities in NASCAR. But outside the world of racing, Joe is a grandfather to the children of his two late sons, J.D. and Coy, who helped build the Joe Gibbs Racing team.
The 83-year-old JGR team owner and former NLF coach has eight grandchildren, four from J.D. and four from Coy. Two of them are currently competing in the Cup Series including Ty Gibbs, the No. 54 Toyota Camry driver for the Huntersville-based outfit.
So who are Joe’s grandchildren? Let’s find out.
Joe Gibbs’ grandchildren from Coy
Joe Gibbs has four grandchildren from Coy and daughter-in-law Heather, namely Ty, Elle, Case, and Jett.
Ty is Joe's most celebrated grandchild in the NASCAR scene, having won the Xfinity Series championship in 2022 before driving full-time in the Cup Series in 2023.
The No. 54 driver qualified for the 2024 playoffs on points. He competed in the postseason along with his four Cup Series teammates (Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr.) and was eliminated along with Truex Jr. after the final race of the Round of 12 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
So far in his full-time Cup career, Ty Gibbs scored 12 top-5 and 22 top-10 finishes. The 22-year-old driver secured two pole positions this year at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway. He also led more laps than Cup Series veterans Joey Logano and Kyle Busch this season with 394 laps led.
Outside the Cup Series, the Charlotte native hops in the JGR Toyota Supra in the second-tier series as a part-time driver.
Coy died shortly after his son won the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship in 2022. Before he passed away, he served as the chief operating officer and vice chairman at JGR.
Coy Gibbs also had a racing career after competing in the Xfinity Series in 2002-2003 and later in JGR’s motocross teams.
Joe Gibbs’ grandchildren from J.D.
Joe Gibbs has four grandchildren from his eldest son J.D. and daughter-in-law Melissa, namely Jackson, Miller, Jason, and Taylor.
Jackson is one of Joe’s grandchildren who currently takes part in NASCAR. Currently, he is the front tire changer for the No. 20 Toyota Camry of Christopher Bell. Before joining the No. 20 JGR crew, he played college football at UCLA and Appalachian State.
Taylor, meanwhile, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2007 at age 2. After a three-year battle, Taylor was declared cancer-free in April 2010.
J.D. passed away in 2019 of degenerative neurological disease. Like his younger brother, J.D. also competed in the Xfinity Series, known as the National Series back then, in the 90s.
He later served as the race team’s president in 1997 while Joe returned to coaching, along with Coy as an assistant coach, for the Washington Redskins in the NFL from 2004 to 2008.
Under his leadership, J.D. brought multiple Cup Series race winners Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin to the team.
Joe’s daughters-in-law Melissa and Heather participate in the family’s race team business, with the latter assuming a co-owner position.
