Richard Reed Childress, popularly known as Richard Childress, is a former NASCAR driver and the owner of the renowned NASCAR team Richard Childress Racing. Childress, one of the wealthiest men in the sport, is currently valued at over $250 million per Celebrity Net Worth.

Richard Childress was born on September 21, 1945, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Although his main source of wealth was his entrepreneurship, it all started with racing. He started his career as an employee at Douglas Battery. While working, he also raced in small, local stock car competitions.

Childress began racing at a young age but received his first NASCAR opportunity in 1969 when he was 24 years old. At that time, NASCAR drivers went on strike at Talladega, and Childress raced as a replacement driver. It was the start of his journey, which, one might argue, was far from successful.

The 79-year-old racked in 285 races in 12 years but failed to win a race. After he retired from driving in 1981, he took charge of his team, Richard Childress Racing, which he founded in 1969. As he took charge of his team, headquartered in Welcome, North Carolina, he brought in Dale Earnhardt, one of the most successful NASCAR drivers in history.

Together they won six Cup Series titles in 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1994. Besides this, RCR also has five Xfinity Series titles and two Craftsman Truck Series titles. As of 2024, the team has a total of 255 victories (117 Cup Series, 97 Xfinity, 31 Truck and 10 ARCA Menards)

With time, Richard Childress grew his entrepreneurship. As he kept on winning, his wealth also kept on increasing, and this is how he built the Davidson Empire. In 2004, he opened a vineyard in the Yadkin Valley near Lexington, which currently stands as one of the most sought-after locations in the United States.

Besides owning Richard Childress Racing, one of the most successful NASCAR teams, and Richard Childress Vineyards, the former NASCAR driver also owns the ECR Technology (they build engines for their Cup, and Xfinity Series partners).

"Lot of hard work, lot of risk": Richard Childress on his success

Speaking about his entrepreneurial journey, and how he made it big in life, Childress once told Charlotte Business Journal,

"How the hell did all of this stuff happen? I don't know. A lot of hard work. A lot of risk."

Reportedly, one of his less-known business ventures was partnering with the former Microsoft CEO, Bill Gates. Childress and Gates paired up to turn flare oils into liquid methane.

Interestingly, Richard Childress also rooted for the United States Presidential candidate Donald Trump and actively supported him throughout his election campaign this year.
