Joey Logano shared his thoughts in 2023 on whether he could become the winningest driver in NASCAR and match the record tally of seven Cup Series titles.
The 34-year-old won his third Cup championship this year and became only the tenth driver to achieve that feat. However, Logano reflected on his two championships in over 15 years during a 2023 interview. Speaking to Graham Bensinger, he stated he would have liked to have more titles.
"So that's when someone says, "Oh, two-time champion, how does that feel?" I'm like, you don't know how many I should have. I don't understand. Like, five of these things," Logano said (01:43 onwards).
"I mean, no one's gonna beat Richard Petty, right? I mean, 200 wins, it's not possible. Um, I'd like to say it is, but shoot, I mean, we don't race as much as they did then. The landscape of our sport is completely different," he added.
But when it came to claiming seven champions like NASCAR legends like Petty and Dale Earnheart, Joey Logano stated:
"It's not out of the question at all."
Logano has a knack for making the most of his opportunities. This year, he won the championship despite not having the best overall season. This ability to perform at the right time in the playoffs also helped him win his previous titles in 2018 and 2022.
"Probably should have won that championship" - Joey Logano on missed chances
Joey Logano also talked about winning being his only aspiration in NASCAR and looked back on his missed opportunities to claim the title in previous years. During the same 2023 interview, the Team Penske driver said:
"My aspirations are like, I don't look much past the hood pins when it comes to goals for me. Like, I'm not looking that far down the road. I'm looking at tomorrow all the time." (0:15 onwards)
Logano, who debuted in the Cup Series with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008, made it to the final round for the first time in 2014. He talked about the 2016 season where he finished fourth at the final race in Homestead.
"I look at, my first shot at the championship four, I mean, I don't know if it's I should have. I mean, I hit the wall, made a mistake, right? Like, that's kind of the first time in it as young [driver]. I kind of needed that. But if I look at, 20, was that 14, 16 with Carl, you know, racing for the win, he throws a block and we get tangled up on the infield there. Probably should have won that championship," Joey Logano added.
Logano led 45 laps at Homestead, but after a restart, he bumped into Carl Edwards, which sent him into the wall and he finished second overall.
