An American professional stock car racing driver, Junior Johnson was a team owner, driver, engineer, as well as an entrepreneur. Having won 50 NASCAR races in his entire career, Johnson retired as a driver in 1966. As a NASCAR team owner, he won the NASCAR championship three times with drivers Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip, claimed six championships as a team owner, and became the first race team owner to win multiple championships with different drivers.
Johnson was given the nickname “The Last American Hero”, which was also the title of his autobiography and movie based on his upbringing and childhood. His first race debut in the Cup Series came in 1953 when he raced at the Southern 500, Darlington. However, he won his first race in 1955 at the Hickory Motor Speedway. Johnson has had a phenomenal career with a whopping number of 50 wins, 148 top-ten finishes, and 46 poles. His career as a driver and a team owner played an important role in inducting him into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on May 23, 2010. He was also inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1991 as well and was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. Given Johnson only studied till the eighth grade, he introduced the concept of drafting to the NASCAR Cup Series. Johnson experienced marriage thrice in his life. Johnson was married briefly to Mary Jane Gray in 1949. His second wife, Flossie Clark, to whom he got married in 1975, ended in divorce in 1992, although they were childhood friends and had been together since the 1950s.
