Junior Johnson is a former American stock car racing driver. He was aptly nicknamed the “Last American Hero” and had a movie made after his background and early life. Junior Johnson is known in the NASCAR Cup Series as a successful driver and even more successful team owner. He went on to claim 6 championships as a team owner. He won three championships each with Cale Yarborough and Darrell Walltrip. Junior Johnson & Associates was one of the most successful teams during their time. Junior Johnson was born on June 28, 1931 as a native of Ronda, North Carolina, U.S. He died in 2019.

Junior Johnson participated in 313 races over 14 years of his career in the NASCAR Cup Series. He claimed 50 victories, including a victory at the 1960 Daytona 500. He is credited for the introduction of “drafting” technique to NASCAR Cup Series. Junior Johnson won the Daytona 500 using this technique, even though his car was slower than others. He was added to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010 in their inaugural class. He was also named among the 50 Greatest Drivers of NASCAR and later added to the list of the 75 Greatest Drivers of NASCAR in 2023.

Junior Johnson has raced for numerous teams throughout the years, participating in a handful of races as a part-time driver for them. Some of the most notable teams he has participated for are Wood Brothers Racing and Holman Moody Racing. Junior Johnson spent his last two years in the sport as a full-time driver for Junior Johnson & Associates, racking up 10 wins as an owner/driver for his team. He retired as a driver in 1966.
