Following the street race in Chicago, NASCAR heads to the Pocono Raceway this weekend for The Great American Getaway 400. Originally named the Pocono International Raceway, this three-turn, asphalt-paved 2.5-mile tri-oval is owned by Mattco, Inc., making it one of the few tracks not owned by NASCAR.
The Pocono Raceway hosted its first race on the 2.5-mile track in 1971, but on August 4, 1974, the venue welcomed the NASCAR Cup Series for the first time. NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty won in this historic race, driving the iconic No. 43 Dodge for Petty Enterprises.
Through the years, Pocono has been on active duty in the NASCAR Cup Series schedule and has featured 40 different winners in 90 Cup series races. Joe Gibbs Racing's #11 driver Denny Hamlin has secured seven wins at the track, including the race last year, making him the defending champion for the coming weekend.
Last five Cup Series winners at Pocono Raceway
#1 Denny Hamlin (2023)
In a stunning display of skill and experience, JGR driver Denny Hamlin won the HighPoint.com 400 on July 24, 2023. This historic victory was Hamlin's 50th career win in the Cup Series.
Hamlin may have won the race, but the crowd was not impressed by the JGR driver.
On a restart with seven laps to go, he made a tight bump-and-go pass on Kyle Larson, brushing him against the wall. After leading the last seven laps, Hamlin won the race under caution,as Cup Series driver Ryan Preece spun out and stalled.
#2 Chase Elliot (2022)
Hendrick Motorsports #9 driver Chase Elliot emerged victorious at the M&M Fan Appreciation 400 at Pocono Raceway.
Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch were the two frontrunners, eventually finishing the race in P1 and P2 respectively. Following a post-race inspection, both drivers were disqualified from the race, as their cars had an extra piece of tape over each corner of the front facia.
Without leading a single lap, Elliot was announced the winner after the post-race inspection, with Tyler Reddick and Daniel Suarez going up to P2 and P3 respectively.
#3 Kyle Busch (2021)
Two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, after a hard-fought race, came out on top at the Explore The Pocono Mountains 350 on June 28, 2021.
Busch was in P3, behind William Byron and Denny Hamlin, the RCR driver was also facing a gearbox issue and was running on fumes. In a dramatic turn of events, with two laps remaining, both Byron and Hamlin had to pit for fuel, clearing the way for Busch to take the chequered flag.
#4 Alex Bowman (2021)
NASCAR held a doubleheader weekend at the Pocono Raceway in 2021, featuring two Cup Series races on back-to-back days.
HMS driver Alex Bowman secured his third NASCAR Cup Series victory after winning at the Pocono Organics CBD 325 on a jam-packed weekend in June 2021.
Bowman and Larson fought hard to take the lead throughout the race. Larson passed Bowman's #48 Chevrolet on lap 127 of 130. However, on the final lap, Larson's front left tire went flat, bumping Bowman up to P1 right before the chequered flag.
