NASCAR Cup Series returns to the Monster Mile this weekend, marking its annual visit to Dover Motor Speedway. The Würth 400 Cup race will be contested over 400 laps, scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 28.
The 1.03-mile oval in Dover, Delaware is one of the most unique tracks in the NASCAR calendar. The concrete oval features 24 degrees of banking in all four turns, and a non-conventional nine degrees of banking on the straights.
Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing drivers have showcased their dominance at the track, sharing 10 of the previous 12 race wins. Martin Truex Jr. won the previous edition of the race, with Chase Elliott winning the 2022 edition.
This weekend's race at Dover is also shaping up to be a battle between the NASCAR Cup Series giants, but there's also potential for a surprise contender to emerge victorious. Let us take a look at five drivers to watch out for this weekend.
5 NASCAR drivers to watch at the Dover Motor Speedway
#5 Chase Elliott
The 2020 Cup Series champion recently snapped his winless streak at Texas Motor Speedway and has booked his spot in the playoffs. A couple weeks later he returns to Dover, a track where he has won twice.
Chase Elliott has the second-best average finish among active drivers, 9.8, and an impressive nine top-five finishes in his 13 starts at the one-mile oval. He also clinched the first race win at the track in the next-gen car.
#4 William Byron
The #24 Hendrick Motorsports team turns to every track with race-winning speed, winning three in the first 10 rounds of the season. This weekend he returns to a track, where he has yet to secure a victory.
William Byron has three top-five finishes at the track in his nine visits to Dover Motor Speedway. Amusingly, all three of these finishes are fourth-placed results in the last four years. Byron also led a race-high 193 laps last year.
#3 Ross Chastain
The #1 Trackhouse Racing driver is one of the dark horses for this weekend's Würth 400 and could potentially clinch his first win of the season at Dover and secure a spot in the playoffs.
After joining Trackhouse in 2022, Ross Chastain has consistently performed well at the track, securing second and third-place finishes. Chastain demonstrated race-winning speed in last year's race and was also involved in an incident with Kyle Larson.
#2 Martin Truex Jr.
The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion boasts an impressive 11.4 average finish in 33 starts at the track, with four victories and 10 top-five finishes to his name.
Martin Truex Jr. snapped his 54-race winless streak at the Monster Mile last season. Despite showing front-running speed at recent short-track events, he is yet to secure a win this season and could well take his first win of the season at Dover.
#1 Kyle Larson
After two tumultuous weekends at Texas Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, the #5 Hendrick Motorsports driver returns to a track, where he has consistently performed well.
Kyle Larson has the best average finish among active drivers at Dover, 8.6, with one win and seven top-five finishes. Larson has been a victory contender at the track since his time with Chip Ganassi Racing and eventually won the race in 2019.
