NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon has applauded Kyle Larson's decision to make another double duty attempt in 2025. The Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman rates the team's star driver among the top racers to grace the Cup Series.
After a failed attempt at the Memorial Day weekend double (Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day), Larson is set for a second attempt at the 1,100-mile run on May 25, 2025. The former Cup Series champion, along with his teams Hendrick Motorsports and the Arrow McLaren (IndyCar), made the announcement ahead of the race weekend at Watkins Glen International.
After the announcement, the $200M-worth Gordon (via Celebrity Net Worth) spoke highly about Larson's driving skills. He compared the Californian racer with motorsport legends Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt.
"I think him being able to jump into pretty much any kind of race car and get up to speed as fast as he does and win in so many different types of cars, it's just something that I've not seen since Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt," Gordon commented.
The same was shared on X by a senior NASCAR writer. Here's a look at the post, captioned:
Jeff Gordon sees greatness in Kyle Larson and how he can adapt to different race cars.
Andretti won four IndyCar drivers' titles, one USAC Silver Crown Series title (1974), and one Formula 1 world championship (1978). Meanwhile, Foyt won seven IndyCar championships and also claimed victory at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. They are the only two drivers who have won both Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 races.
A brief look at Kyle Larson's first attempt at the Memorial Day weekend double duty with Hendrick Motorsports and the Arrow McLaren
Hendrick Motorsports star driver Kyle Larson attempted the iconic Memorial Day weekend double-duty in May this season. He became the fifth racer to try his luck at the 1,100-mile-long run after John Andretti (1994), Tony Stewart (1999 and 2001), Robby Gordon (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004), as well as Kurt Busch (2014).
However, Larson's day was severely impacted by rain. After a four-hour delay, the Californian racer began the first leg of the run in the Indianapolis 500. This unexpected delay forced HMS and Larson to make the difficult decision to miss the start of the Coca-Cola 600 in order to complete the Indy 500 race. Reserve driver Justin Allgaier was scheduled to fill in for the #5 NASCAR Cup Series driver at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
After successfully finishing the first half of the double duty in 18th place, Larson immediately departed for Charlotte. Meanwhile, Allgaier made good progress through the field in the Coca-Cola 600 race, running in 13th place as Larson approached the pit-lane. However, with lightning and rain worsening at the North Carolina-based circuit, NASCAR officials were forced to end the race abruptly.
Now, as the 2024 Cup Series season nears the end, Hendrick Motorsports and Kyle Larson have announced the second attempt at the Memorial Day weekend double-duty in the 2025 season.
