The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series championship just wrapped up at Phoenix Raceway, and Team Penske's Joey Logano won the title for the third time. NASCAR revealed that the 2024 season became the "second season ever" in which either Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, or Kyle Busch did not win a race.
The only season before 2024 was the 1978 NASCAR Winston Cup Series, where none of these prominent drivers were able to secure a victory. Dale Earnhardt Sr. was winless in the 1978 NASCAR Cup series and finished in P41 in the driver standings. He started racing in NASCAR in 1975 and was in the early stages of his career.
On the other hand, despite being a dominant force in stock car racing, Richard Petty also went winless in the season. He finished in P6 in the standings with 11 top-five and 17 top-ten finishes, and this was his only winless season. Since then, either Dale Earnhardt Sr., Jeff Gordon, or Kyle Busch have secured the NASCAR Cup Series. Later in 2008 and 2010, Jeff Gordon went winless, but Busch covered for him and secured wins both years.
However, the 2024 season changed everything Kyle Busch ended the season without a win. The RCR driver Kyle Busch hasn't been winless in a season for nine years and has never missed the playoffs in the past 15 seasons. But in the 2024 season, he remained winless and broke his at least one-win streak. Busch's last win was recorded at the World Wide Technology Raceway on June 4, 2023.
Lee Petty was the only driver who was able to secure a win in every season till his retirement in 1961.
“Is this what you want to see?" Analytics criticize NASCAR's format after Joey Logano's victory
Team Penske driver won the final race of the Cup Series championship on Sunday and won the title for the third time. However, his victory was not enough to impress the critics, and they shed light on his 2024 statistics.
Logano has been one of the best drivers this season. Even though he had a full start, he made some astonishing comebacks and proved his worth. He secured four wins, including the Phoenix race, and is the driver with the second-most wins this season after Kyle Busch's six-win record.
Despite his record, Auto Racing Analytics was not impressed by the #22's performance. He wrote:
"Statistically, the... 10th fastest, 22nd best re-starter, 31st most efficient passer, Is the champion. Congrats Joey Logano on a fantastic season and rising to the occasion. They were the best by the system. Is this what you want to see?"
The Cup Series champion secured seven top-five and 13 top-ten finishes. Additionally, he secured three pole positions and led 414 laps.
