NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. has revealed Martin Truex Jr.'s quirky texting habits. Truex, 43, is set to retire at the end of the 2024 season.
Former NASCAR Cup Series champion and Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Martin Truex Jr. announced his retirement from the sport at the end of the ongoing campaign. Truex, who remains the oldest driver on the grid this season, confirmed his decision after weeks of speculations surrounding his future.
As MTJ prepares for a life outside the NASCAR racetrack, the Mayetta, New Jersey native is already lining up his post-retirement plans. Shortly after his announcement, Truex made an appearance on his good friend and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s podcast, Dale Jr Download.
As the veteran duo revealed tales of the past, Earnhardt, who is worth $300 million (according to Celebrity Net Worth), humorously revealed Truex's unique texting style. He said:
"Truex is not a texter. If I go back and look at our text messages, just me and you, I get an 'okay,' 'okay LOL,' 'yeah,' 'figured,' 'that's for sure,' 'laughing my a** off,' 'thanks pal,' 'yeah," 'okay', 'laughing emoji.' I mean that's it. That's Truex."
Earnhardt joked that Truex's texting habits might change now that he’s retiring from full-time racing. He added:
"But I think you're gonna text at a record pace over the next several years now that you're not a miserable full-time Cup race car driver. You just don't even know when you climb out from under this rock, how damn much weights is going to be lifted off your shoulders. "
Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed excitement about watching Martin Truex Jr. transition into his post-racing life, saying:
"I'm really looking forward to watching you go through the next two or three years, and really try to evolve into this person you want to be for the next couple of decades."
Martin Truex Jr. elaborates to Dale Earnhardt Jr. the reason that drove him to his retirement decision
Truex had come close to announcing his retirement in the past. However, it wasn't until this season that the JGR driver felt firm with his decision.
He told Dale Earnhardt Jr.:
""I don't know exactly. There wasn't like a day where I woke up and I was like, 'alright I'm done,' you know. I didn't make a list or check off pros and cons or anything. I just waited till I felt like it was the right time, and here we are." (10:50)
"I definitely knew for probably a month or two before I told anyone. I've known for a while, and I was just waiting for something to push me back over the fence to doing it again."
Despite his retirement, Martin Truex Jr. has confirmed that he will return on a part-time schedule next season. The 43-year-old driver had clinched the NASCAR Cup Series regular-season championship last campaign.
