"The Great American Race", more commonly called the Daytona 500, has served as the season opener event for the NASCAR Cup Series since 1959. Since its inaugural edition, several father-son duos have driven the 2.5-mile asphalt track of the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The first driver to win the Daytona 500 race was Lee Petty. His son, Richard Petty, would go on to win the Daytona 500 race a record seven times. The Pettys were the first father-son duo to race at the 500-mile-long event and secure a win. However, they weren't the only ones to do so in NASCAR.
Here's a list of a few iconic father-son duos who raced the esteemed Daytona 500:
#1 Bobby Allison and Davey Allison
1983 Cup Series champion Bobby Allison secured three Daytona 500 wins in his career. He is one of the winningest drivers in NASCAR's history with 84 Cup wins, fourth on the all-time win list.
His son Davey secured 19 Cup wins in over 190 starts. He came close to winning his first Daytona race but was held off by his father in the final laps of the 1988 Daytona 500 race. However, he finally claimed a Daytona 500 victory, in 1992.
#2 Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
The Earnhardts have been one of the most famous racing families in NASCAR. Dale Sr., a seven-time Cup Series champion, amassed 76 wins in his career. His wins include the 1998 Daytona 500 race.
Dale Jr., meanwhile, holds the record for winning the Most Popular Driver award 15 consecutive times. Although Junior couldn't win a Cup Series title, he became a two-time Daytona 500 winner, with wins in 2004 and 2014. Dale Jr. did claim two Xfinity Series championships.
#3 Richard Petty and Kyle Petty
Richard Petty is tied with legendary drivers Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson with seven Cup Series titles. Petty drove through Victory Lane at the Daytona 500 seven times in his prolific career.
Meanwhile, his son Kyle competed several times in the 'Great American Race' in his career that spanned across three decades. He managed to take pole position in 1993 at the Daytona 500, but couldn't convert it into a win at the esteemed race.
#4 Bill Elliott and Chase Elliott
The Elliotts have won the Most Popular Driver Award a combined 22 times. Bill Elliot won that particular award a record 16 times, while Chase has won it a record six consecutive times. The father-son duo have also carved their names on the Cup Series championship with one title win each.
Bill also won the 1985 and 1987 Daytona 500 races from pole position. However, the #9 Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase hasn't claimed a Daytona win yet but did secure pole positions in the 2016 and 2017 races.
#5 Ned Jarrett and Dale Jarrett
"Gentleman" Ned Jarrett couldn't place his car in Victory Lane at the famed Daytona 500 but his son Dale went on to show his skills in Daytona later, winning the race multiple times.
1999 Cup Series champion Dale Jarrett accumulated 32 Cup wins across more than two decades of racing. The younger Jarrett's victories included three Daytona 500 triumphs. Moreover, he made a name for himself by winning the Brickyard 400 twice, alongside one Coca-Cola 600 win.
