NASCAR legend Mark Martin blasted the racing and all the chaos that unfolded at Martinsville. Ryan Blaney booked his berth in the championship 4 with a stunning victory over Chase Elliott. However, the controversy towards the end of the race involving William Byron, Christopher Bell and others marred Blaney's brilliant achievement in his hometown.
Byron and Bell finished the race level on points for the final spot to contest for the championship in Phoenix. Bell overtook Bubba Wallace in the final corner with a Hail Melon-lookalike move. The JGR driver was served with a safety violation, which secured William Byron's qualification.
However, there were also concerns about Chevrolet manipulating the race after Ross Chastain and Austin Dillon held up traffic for William Byron. The result eventually helped Byron qualify for the championship 4.
Mark Martin tweeted:
"We have a s**t show here."
NASCAR VP Elton Sawyer had a different view of the opinion of the $70M former star (According to Celebrity Net Worth). He said in his post-race press conference:
"I think the big thing, again, as you look at the totality of the event, you look from start to finish, there’s a lot of positives that come out of today. Again, Ryan, defending champion, the drive that he had, the cars that he had to pass. You think about the stress that that race team was under, like a lot of ’em."
He added:
"I think there’s this tremendous amount of positive that comes out of this."
Ryan Blaney glad not to be a part of Martinsville controversy
Home hero Ryan Blaney's win might have been tainted by other controversies, but the defending champion had little clue about the current affairs. The Penske driver asked the media personnel to bring him up to speed on everything that was going on.
After knowing the gist of the matter, Bob Pockrass asked Ryan Blaney if he was happy of not being a part of any controversies, the 30-year-old said:
"F*cking right I am."
In the post-race interview after his win, Blaney explained his remorse over bumping a few drivers and feeling exhausted.
“I hated I had to lay the bumper to some guys, but I had to do it,” said Blaney.
“I laid the bumper to a couple guys that I wish I didn’t have to, but I needed to get going, so it was a long night. I think that’s the most tired I’ve been after a race in a long time.”
While Ryan Blaney will look to defend his title, his Penske teammate Joey Logano will seek his third Cup Series championship. Tyler Reddick and William Byron will also battle against the Penske pair in a bid to become the NASCAR Cup Series Champion for the first time. All to race for in Phoenix.
