NASCAR legend Kyle Busch once gave a special tour to NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip. The two-time Cup Series champion walked Waltrip through his trophy warehouse and the latter was awed.
One of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, Richard Childress Racing superstar Busch is known for his spectacular racing statistics. The 39-year-old driver, who is ranked ninth in the list for most Cup Series victories, is also the most successful driver in both the Xfinity and the Truck Series.
Back in 2019, the Las Vegas native took three-time Cup champion and a former Daytona 500 winner, Darrell Waltrip, on a tour through his enormous 72,000 sq ft warehouse featuring his trophies, plaques and memorabilia. As Waltrip toured the facility, he couldn’t hide his astonishment at the scale of Busch’s collection.
"That trophy case right there is actually a trophy from every single race track on the NASCAR circuit," Busch explained. (0:12)
Darrell Waltrip quipped:
"You know the difference between you and the rest of us? We have a trophy case; you have a trophy warehouse."
The duo then played a fun game where Busch was blindfolded and was challenged to identify trophies based solely on touch. Busch effortlessly recalled details about the events, locations, and even the drivers he bested to claim each trophy.
Among his impressive recollections were:
- Truck Series, Charlotte Motor Speedway, 2019: Victory over Brennan Poole
- Cup Series, Pocono, 2018: Triumph against Daniel Suarez
- Cup Series, Dover, 2010: Beating Jeff Burton
- Truck Series, Bristol, 2017: Finishing ahead of Matt Krafton
Later in the video, Darrell Waltrip asked Kyle Busch if the latter ever imagined winning more than 200 trophies. Busch responded:
"No, I never would have thought that the results and the success would have been quite to this level, and I hope there's at least another 10 left in me where I can continue to keep wrapping these things up. So, that 84, I'm coming for you!"
Kyle Busch reflects on ending win streak in 2024
His second season with Richard Childress Racing was one to forget for Kyle Busch. The 39-year-old driver failed to qualify for playoffs for the first time since 2012, finishing 20th in the Cup Series standings.
What was worse for Busch, however, was the fact that he finished the campaign winless. The RCR star had won a race in his career for every year since 2003. He holds the record for the most consecutive seasons with a win in his bag (19).
However, with that streak now coming to an end, Kyle Busch expressed his frustration. In a recent interview with RACER, he said:
"It was just not at all what we had hoped it to be after some success last year, especially early in the year having those three wins and then struggling a little bit on and off. But then this year, just seemingly not being able to get the monkey off our back. Even having a shot to win late in the day; being close at Daytona, and maybe even closer at Kansas, and not being able to pull through."
Kyle Busch would aim to make a strong comeback in 2025. The season starts on February 16th with the Daytona 500.
