NASCAR legend Mark Martin recently urged his social media followers to listen to the latest episode of The Scene Vault podcast which discusses the events that took place in the 1991 Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Martin was piloting the #6 Ford for Roush Racing and had narrowly missed out on securing his first Cup Series title the previous year, falling 26 points short of seven-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt.
Martin's day in the 1991 Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway was jeopardized after a mistake from a crew member had to pull him back into the pits twice in less than 3 laps. This set him back against his competitors, which infuriated Roush Racing's owner Jack Roush. The five-time IROC champion's then-crew chief Robin Pemberton thoroughly discussed the events that followed the botched pit stop.
Urging fans to listen to this story, Mark Martin shared the podcast on X and wrote:
"This is a must-listen. Excellent insight into our team in 1991."
Martin's 31-year NASCAR career established him as one of the sport's all-time greats. Known for his remarkable skill and unwavering consistency, Martin achieved 96 victories across NASCAR's top three divisions, with 40 of those coming in the Cup Series. Despite falling short of a championship title and finishing as the runner-up five times, he is regarded as a legend in the sport.
The NASCAR Hall of Famer retired from racing after the 2013 Cup Series campaign. While many former full-time drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have returned as part-time competitors, Mark Martin embraced his retirement from the sport after cementing his legacy as an elite driver.
"He makes cold decisions" - Mark Martin's former crew chief sheds light on Jack Roush's outburst in 1991 at Atlanta
Mark Martin's former crew chief Robin Pemberton recently shared a detailed rundown of how things transpired at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1991. Pemberton shared that his younger brother accidentally left a wedge wrench inside the cockpit of Martin's #6 Ford.
This infuriated Roush Racing's owner Jack Roush, leading to a physical outburst from the team owner in the pits. Following that, Roush reportedly fired Pemberton's brother, however, Martin's former crew chief said that he respected the decision. He said (via The Scene Vault podcast):
"You Know Jack was Jack right? He makes cold decisions based on that's how he runs things right and I respect that[...]He fired me three times in five years. The second or third time he fired me we laughed about it." [3:30]
"It was about something and I said 'Look, you're here all day,' I said, 'You got all day to think about it but I'm not leaving, you're not going to fire me and I'm not going to leave. I don't own this thing but it's as much mine as it is yours. So I'm going out here and go to work. Let me know what you think at the end of the day'," Pemberton added.
Meanwhile, the Cup Series will return for the 2025 pre-season Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium on 2nd February. The race will be exclusively available to stream on FOX, MRN, and SiriusXM's NASCAR channel.
