Team Penske driver Joey Logano won his third Cup Series championship title at Phoenix Raceway on November 10, 2024, ending a two-year hiatus. Despite Logano's dominant performance in the past few races, fans were unimpressed by him. Fans compared Logano's 2024 stats with Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson's stats and expressed their opinions.
NASCAR stat person Trey Ryan recently shared the breakdown of the 2024 Cup Series on his X. The breakdown included a handful of stats. However, Logano was nowhere to be found on the table, and Larson dominated it with his remarkable performance. Fans expressed their disbelief at Logano's win in the final race.
Kyle Larson claimed the most victories (six) in the 2024 season, while Joey Logano secured four, including the Championship Four race. Larson also notched 15 top-five finishes compared to Logano's seven. Additionally, the Hendrick Motorsports driver led an impressive 1699 laps over the season, whereas the Team Penske driver just led 414 laps.
After analyzing the stat breakdown and seeing Larson's dominance throughout the season, fans called out NASCAR's playoff format.
A fan called out NASCAR's playoff format and commented:
"The championship playoff system is broken 😡 Lagano as champion is absolutely pathetic."
One more netizen criticized the playoff format, calling NASCAR a "joke," and wrote:
"How can you have a champion that literally is not the best in any stat? This sport is a joke."
Another called out Joey Logano driver for not having impressive stats and wrote:
"Imagine having a champion that doesn’t lead any major or minor statical category."
One of the fans examined the chart thoroughly and commented:
"logano is nowhere on this list 💀😭."
A motorsports fan creatively highlighted the comparison between Kyle Larson's and Joey Lognao's stats and wrote:
"6-Wins-5-Poles=CHAMPION...."
After facing criticism, Joey Logano defended the NASCAR playoff system
This season the playoff system proved to be tough on the top-performing drivers, and Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson is the perfect example of the same. He performed astonishingly well, securing top-notch stats, but failed to advance in the Championship Four race.
However, Joey Logano defended NASCAR's playoff format, comparing it to other sports, and said:
"The only reason why they don't say this about other sports is because they didn't change the playoff system. But the playoff system and other sports is not much different than what this is. You can have a great regular season. It sees you better for the playoffs, right? Now, that doesn't mean you're guaranteed to go all the way to Super Bowl or to Stanley Cup finals or to NBA finals. It doesn't matter."
Further, he explained that NASCAR's playoff format provides a fairground for the drivers to compete for the Cup Series championship.
