NASCAR insider Jeff Gluck revealed Alex Bowman's instant reaction after he learned about his disqualification at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver was sitting beside a pool when the news about him getting disqualified from the playoffs surfaced on Twitter.
As a result, the #48 Chevy driver anticipated a barrage of texts on his phone following which he threw it in the pool. However, Bowman's action cascaded into his iPhone calling 911 as the mobile device thought the driver had been in a car crash.
The eight-time Cup Series race winner was the worst HMS finisher in the Round of 12 finale at Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course. Nonehteless, he made the playoffs and was set to keep his championship fight alive in the upcoming Round of 8 opener at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, slated for Sunday, Oct. 30, at 2.30 PM ET.
However, disappointment soon knocked on Bowman's door, as his #48 Chevrolet Camaro failed the post-race inspection for being underweight. Thus, the officials clipped 20 points earned by the HMS driver and reinstated Joey Logano in the playoffs.
Jeff Gluck mentioned Alex Bowman's reaction after he learned about the setback. Taking to X, the NASCAR insider reported.
"Alex Bowman learned the DQ news from Twitter and then he threw his phone in the pool bc he knew it was about to blow up with texts. When it hit the bottom of the pool, his phone called 911 because it thought he had been in a car crash. (Fortunately, the cops didn’t show up because there was no service under the water, he said.). His phone still works (iPhones are waterproof.)," Gluck wrote.
Except for Bowman, all HMS drivers are in the playoffs, with two drivers- Kyle Larson and William Byron above the cutline.
"We just overstepped the margin": Alex Bowman comments on his disqualification at Charlotte Roval
Despite getting marred by three DNFs in the regular season, the #48 Chevy driver's solitary win, six top-5s, and 13 top-10s punched his playoff ticket, keeping the driver in contention for clinching his maiden Cup Series title. However, the post-race infraction proved costly for the Bowman.
NASCAR Cup Series director Brad Moran elaborated that the officials "gave them every opportunity" to pass the post-race inspection. This included fueling the car, purging the wire system, and adding water. Still, the #48 Chevy couldn't meet the threshold and was kicked out of the playoffs.
Nearly a week after the DQ fiasco, Bowman broke silence and commented on his Charlotte dismay. He said (via Bob Pockrass on X).
"Yes and no. I think I understand where everybody was at on that, and we just overstepped the margin. Like it's pretty black and white at that point. So, yeah, it's part of life," Bowman said (0:09).
Alex Bowman is currently placed ninth in the standings, and since he's out of the playoffs, P9 is the best possible spot he can settle in the current season.
