Austin Cindric's crew chief, Brian Wilson, reflected on his 21-year journey with Team Penske, as he is currently in his 21st season working for "The Captain," Roger Penske.
Hailing from Detriot, Michigan, Wilson grew up around racing and is a second-generation race engineer. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he joined Team Penske as a shock specialist in 2004. He was soon promoted to the rank of a race engineer and more recently, a Cup Series crew chief.
In a recent interview with Davey Segal, Brian Wilson opened up about his two-decade-long tenure at Penske. He recalled working with Kurt Busch in 2007 and mentioned that he is the only team member who has remained a constant in all the debriefing sessions since then.
Austin Cindric's #2 Penske Ford crew chief joked that such stories make him sound "really old" but he has relished his journey with the team, describing it as amazing and wild.
"It sinks in sometimes when I'm making myself sound really old by telling these stories. It's been amazing, it's been really wild," Wilson said.
"When I first started I was like, I just hope that I can make a career in racing. To be able to climb the ranks and to go from a shock specialist to an engineer to a crew chief now, it has been really amazing for me," he added about his climb through the ranks.
In his two-decade tenure under "The Captain," Brian Wilson has achieved plenty of success as a race engineer and a crew chief at the Xfinity level. He recently racked up his 50th win for the organization with Austin Cindric at Gateway.
Brian Wilson reflects on his milestone win with Austin Cindric
Austin Cindric's recent victory at Gateway marked Brian Wilson's first victory as a crew chief in the Cup Series and his landmark 50th visit to victory lane.
Wilson, a race engineer savvy with numbers and data, admitted that he had been waiting for the 50th win for a long time. He credited the Penske organization and the drivers for powering him to this landmark victory.
"It's a big number, I'm an engineer so I track these things and I have been paying attention to it, knowing where I'm at. It's amazing, 50 times I have stood in victory lane with my teammates. It's pretty amazing, it's the one that I've been wanting to get for a while but, yeah, its a lot of great teams and a lot of great drivers," he said in the interview.
Brian Wilson played an instrumental role in Brad Keselowski's championship triumphs at the Xfinity and Cup levels. He has also achieved plenty of success with Austin Cindric at the Xfinity level, securing 13 victories and an owner's championship in separate seasons.
Wilson made his debut as a crew chief in the Cup Series for the #21 Wood Brothers Racing team in 2022. He reunited with Austin Cindric in late 2023 and has now reached victory lane with the #2 Ford team.
