Chase Briscoe is set to join Joe Gibbs Racing in 2025, replacing the retiring Martin Truex Jr., whose departure will leave a big void in the team. Toyota Racing Development prresident David Wilson acknowledged that Briscoe has big shoes to fill but expressed confidence in his ability to rise to the challenge.

Truex will retire from full-time competition at the end of the season, concluding his six-year tenure with Joe Gibbs Racing. Despite not winning a title with JGR, he has been a regular championship contender and a veteran leader in the Toyota camp.

In an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Wilson spoke about Truex's significant contributions to JGR and Toyota. He acknowledged that Truex's departure would leave a substantial void in the team but expressed confidence in Chase Briscoe's ability to take over the mantle.

"Anybody who sits in the #19 has big shoes to fill. As they say, Martin Truex is just a special special talent, he's not just a special talent he's just a good dude," Wilson said.

The TRD president also elaborated on why they chose Chase Briscoe to replace Martin Truex Jr. He explained that JGR needed a driver who could bring both experience and youthfulness to strike the right balance in the team.

The #14 SHR Ford driver ticked all the boxes, with four years of experience in the Cup Series and a race win.

"One of the things that we believe in is to maintain a balance in the ecosystem of that race team and not have it too heavily weighted toward young talent or toward veteran talent, but have a mixture. Collectively we believe that Chase Briscoe is going to be the right fit," he added

David Wilson noted that, like Truex, Chase Briscoe is also a "good dude" and highlighted his rise through the ranks of stock car racing to reach the NASCAR Cup Series. He believes Briscoe would be a great addition to the Joe Gibbs Racing driver lineup.

Coach Gibbs discloses reason behind picking Chase Briscoe

Searching for Martin Truex Jr.'s replacement, the Joe Gibbs Racing owner prioritized a blend of experience and youthfulness. After analyzing the driver market, Gibbs deemed Chase Briscoe as the ideal fit for the #19 team.

Coach Gibbs also highlighted Briscoe's stellar Xfinity campaign in 2020 with Stewart-Haas Racing, where he secured nine victories. He emphasized that a driver's performance in the Xfinity Series often serves as a bellwether on their potential in the Cup Series.

"We were kind of looking at somebody that had the experience, still young, is showed in his background.
"If you look at what he did in Xfinity, leading the laps, nine wins and all, that shows you, that's the part of our world, where you get the feeling somebody can do at the Cup level." Gibbs said.

Briscoe is set to join the #19 JGR team next season, where he will be paired with incumbent crew chief James Small.
