NASCAR Cup Series driver and former Xfinity team owner BJ McLeod sold the charter of BJ McLeod Motorsports to Spire Motorsports last season. During an interview with the RACER, the Florida-born driver shared his opinion on selling his team.
McLeod began his racing career with karting. After honing his racecraft, he progressed through super late models, ARCA Menards and Truck Series, before ending up in the top two national stock car racing series (Cup and Xfinity). Despite being in NASCAR for over 12 years, the 41-year-old managed to finish in the Top 10s just twice. Apart from being a racing driver, McLeod also ran a team in the Xfinity Series until the end of 2023.
During an interview with the US-based publication RACER, McLeod expressed his feelings on selling his team to the Rick Hendrick-owned Spire Motorsports. He said:
"(I’m) very happy with the decision. If I had to say one way or the other, I’m happier now than I was a year ago. That decision is something I’ll always be thankful we had the opportunity (to do) and proud we went in that direction."
"Not being at the track every week is hard for (wife) Jessica and I because the NASCAR family is our family. We miss seeing the people. We were in this thing for 14 years, and a lot of that was full-time seasons. So it was difficult when we only went 12 times this year. It’s tough because those are the people you’re used to being around, even though you’re competing and sometimes you don’t get along. It’s like a family," McLeod added.
McLeod's statement was shared on X by a NASCAR publication Jayski. Here's a look at the post, captioned:

"I just want to prove that I could be a contender in the right equipment with the right circumstances" - NASCAR star BJ McLeod on still chasing his first-ever NASCAR race win
NASCAR star BJ McLeod has been part of the top national stock car racing series for over 12 years. Despite a long run, the Florida-born racer is still chasing his first-ever race win.
In an interview with The Athletic, McLeod expressed his desire to win a NASCAR race.
"I want to prove that I’m a contender,” he said. “I know once you get to this level, you can be 20th and be a winner. You can be 30th and be a winner. It is extremely hard out there. But I just want to prove that I could be a contender in the right equipment with the right circumstances. Even if it’s only one for one race. Because once you are, the people around can see that, and that’s what I’ve always tried to do."
Apart from being a racer, McLeod also operated his Xfinity racing team, BJ McLeod Motorsports for eight years from 2016 to 2023.
