On the heels of Joey Logano's controversial NASCAR Cup Series championship win, Brad Keselowski weighed in on the possibility of a playoff format change. The 2012 Cup Series champion had a hard time rationalizing why the driver with the most wins in a given season doesn't end up as the champion.
The driver of the #6 RFK Racing Ford, a team co-owned by Keselowski, was quoted in an article by racing insider Matt Weaver on what he'd like to see change within the current Cup Series playoff format. While NASCAR hasn't made any changes yet, the Michigan native would prefer an emphasis on race wins.
“I have a hard time as a competitor and a fan of the sport understanding how drivers with most wins routinely don’t win championships. I just don’t think that feels right to me. I would like to see, if there were any format changes, more value on race wins as a whole through the duration of the season.”
Criticism of the points format sparked after Logano captured his third career Cup title this season, despite having an average finish of 17.4 which is the worst of any champion in the sport's history. However, the #22 Team Penske Ford driver maneuvered his way through the three rounds of the playoffs and won the Championship 4 race at Phoenix to claim the title.
Although there are things Keselowski, a former teammate of Logano, would like to see differently about the playoffs, he added that many of the sport's partners and a litany of race fans enjoy it.
“I think we have media partners who really, really think the playoffs are great and it’s important to make them happy,” Keselowski said. “And there’s some sentiment from fans about it as well that is important to recognize. So it’s a difficult situation.” (via Sportsnaut)
As Logano went on to win the 2024 title, Brad Keselowski was plagued by a 110-race winless drought this season with a victory at the Darlington Raceway in May. He qualified for the playoffs but was subsequently eliminated in the Round of 12.
Logano said everything went "perfect" at the end of the 2024 season
En route to his third career NASCAR Cup Series championship, the first half of the 2024 season wasn't too good for Joey Logano. However, the Connecticut native turned up the heat when it mattered most and captured his third title in seven years.
When it came to the final few races of the year, Logano said it couldn't have gone any better for him and his #22 team. He added:
"It seemed like just everything went right at the end of the year and it is so crazy to me because everything went wrong in the first half. And the last four races, we couldn't do anything wrong ... like you can't draw that up any better, just everything went perfect."
Logano became just the ninth driver in the sport's history to win at least three championships. His triumph was significant for Team Penske, too, as it marked the organization's third straight title.
