Some NASCAR fans have disapproved of Sam Mayer winning the Xfinity Series race held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway over Parker Kligerman. The officials had at least 20 seconds to throw caution after Leland Honeyman's #42 Chevy got stuck in the tires but did moments before Kligerman took the white flag as the leader.
The Drive to Cure 250 saw Sam Mayer braving the overtime restart and dethrone Kligerman from his potential career-first Xfinity triumph. The former was in a must-win situation after getting disqualified at the preceding race in Talladega.
Big Machine Racing's Kligerman has announced that he would be retiring from full-time Xfinity racing after the 2024 season. Since his first race in 2009 at Kansas Speedway, the #48 Chevy driver never saw the victory lane and was moments away from winning under caution.
However, the officials were late in issuing a caution, and their call put paid to Kligerman's chances of advancing to the Round of 8.
Here's Sam Mayer's 'walk-off win' video from Charlotte's Road Course (via NASCAR Xfinity):
Seeing Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s driver taking the checkered flag, fans shared their displeasure with NASCAR's ruling.
"Bunch of BS is what it is," one fan commented.
"What a load of complete garbage. And you wonder why you’re losing fans, sponsors, and teams left and right," a fan wrote.
"Fire those officials for not throwing that caution the IMMEDIATE INSTANT the #42 was in the wall and making everyone guess," a fan criticized.
This fan didn't accept Mayer's win and claimed Parker Kligerman as the actual winner.
"Nah…@pkligerman won that race," the fan opined.
"Let's just keep screwing that fans every week. Parker won or nascar should have thrown the caution sooner," a fan commented.
The retiring Big Machine Racing driver stood sixth after surging from a P22 start.
Kenny Wallace blames NASCAR's 'controversial' timing for Parker Kligerman's Charlotte loss
Former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace slammed NASCAR officials for pressing the caution button when Parker Kligerman was merely two feet away from taking the white flag as leader.
Wallace outlined that officials had ample time to throw caution, but their timing proved fatal for the Big Machine Racing driver, who otherwise would've ended his full-time Xfinity career with a win in the bag.
Shortly after the Drive to Cure 250 was done and dusted, Wallace, who boasts nine Xfinity wins, opened up on NASCAR's 'controversial' move.
"What did they do? They wait and wait and wait, and they throw the white flag before Parker gets to the start/finish line. So, two feet determines whether Parker Kligerman is a winner or not," Wallace said via X (2:24).
"Here's the controversy, it's (officials) human...NASCAR decides when to push that button. It's a human up there, the human decides when to push the button. So, they push the button two feet before Parker Kligerman gets there, and it's just a bi**h. And that's all there's to it," he added.
Kligerman's winless streak has been increased to 118 after NASCAR's Charlotte call. It has thrown the retiring driver out of the playoffs.
