After the Pocono race, tensions flared between Chandler Smith and Sam Mayer, leading to a heated exchange on pit road. Bubba Wallace’s spotter Freddie Kraft didn't hold back his opinions about the altercation and Smith overall. Mayer finished 10th. Smith, who came in 15th, felt Mayer had been overly aggressive on the track.
Post-race, Smith didn't waste time. He approached Mayer's car to confront him as he was still unstrapping. His displeasure was evident. The broadcast hadn't shown any specific incidents between the two, yet Smith felt compelled to address what he perceived as Mayer's rough tactics.
During the confrontation, it was noted by the "Door Bumper Clear" podcast crew that Smith had removed his helmet but left his head sock on, prompting Brett Griffin to comment humorously on the situation. He said:
"Maybe he wanted to look like a Ninja."
Freddie Kraft also quipped about Chandler Smith showing up with a head sock on, saying:
"You can't be taken seriously when you're yelling at someone with your head sock still on."
Kraft didn’t stop there. He humorously critiqued Smith's physical stature, particularly his legs, adding:
"Chandler's legs- I don't even know what to compare them to. I really want Chandler and Parker Retzlaff off to fight each other. Oh my god. It'd be the chicken leg fight of the century. I told you."
TJ Majors chimed in with a witty analogy, suggesting it would look like "strings on a ceiling fan swinging at each other."
While Sam Mayer focused more on acknowledging his earlier racing mishap with Shane van Gisbergen rather than responding to Smith’s accusations, Smith defended his reasons for the pit road confrontation during his post-race interview.
Chandler Smith talks about what irked him on the track
Chandler Smith opened up about his issues with how Sam Mayer raced him during the final stages of Saturday’s race. Smith shared his frustrations post-race, saying [via Toby Christie]:
“I mean he sat on my door in the tunnel turn three times, is that about right, all three times, and then he wrecked the #97. He ain’t gonna mess with me anymore, I can promise you that, if he does he’s gonna — I guarantee he won’t do it again, so hopefully he got the message.”
Next, Smith and Mayer will face off again at the Pennzoil 250 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 20. It will be the first time either driver will compete on the track.
So far this season, Chandler Smith has won two races and secured five top-5 finishes. Sam Mayer, similarly, has notched two wins and four top-5 finishes.
