Recently, Chase Briscoe was announced as the replacement for #19 Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. for the 2025 Cup Series season. In a recent conversation, Briscoe spoke about his interaction with JGR owner Joe Gibbs and how the latter convinced him to get behind the wheel of the #19 Toyota.
Briscoe's recent announcement of joining the JGR shed didn't come as a surprise, as #20 Christopher Bell unintentionally declared Briscoe his JGR teammate in a media interaction a couple of days ago.
In a recent episode of Stacking Pennies with Corey LaJoie, #14 Briscoe recalled the time when NASCAR Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs approached Briscoe and convinced him to join Joe Gibbs Racing as a full-time driver, replacing the current #19 Toyota driver, Truex Jr. As Truex Jr. was signed to a one-year contract extension with Gibbs' team, his future with JGR appeared uncertain. The veteran eventually declared that he would retire after the 2024 season, which made it imperative for JGR to find a replacement. Briscoe, in the conversation, said:
"Well then Joe(Gibbs) shows up just randomly and Joe's like, "Hey, I want you to know how bad I want you to be at our place. Like we think you're an amazing fit, you know we looked at your Xfinity stats and you know what you've been able to do in the cup car and we just really think you would be a great fit for our place and you know I don't know what Martin's(Truex Jr.) going to do."
Moreover, Coach Gibbs wanted to reaffirm Briscoe's place under the JGR shed due to rumors that he would be joining Wood Brothers Racing and taking Harrison Burton's place as the #21 Ford driver. Briscoe then narrated what Gibbs told him in their conversation.
"I'm(Joe Gibbs) just scared to death about you going to meet with the Wood Brothers and I don't want to lose you if Martin ends up deciding that he doesn't want to come back. So I wanted to come over here and look you in the eye and shake your hand and just tell you that if Martin's out you're in," Briscoe narrated as Joe Gibbs.
As the 29-year-old Briscoe concluded, Spire Motorsports' driver, Corey LaJoie, also the host of the podcast, asked Briscoe if the former NFL coach had the Super Bowl ring while shaking his hand.
"Did his hand have Super bowl ring? asked LaJoie."
"Yeah," replied Briscoe.
"Everything kept pointing us back to Chase," - Gibbs on Chase Briscoe's addition to the JGR team
Chase Briscoe became the first driver of the four Stewart-Haas Racing drivers to land a ride post-2024 season. Briscoe has been a part of the SHR outfit for the last four years, since his full-time Cup Series debut in 2021.
As Briscoe gets behind the wheel of the #19 Toyota, the #19 team's current sponsor, Bass Pro Shops, and the crew chief will continue to remain with the #19 car.
In a recent media interaction, the 83-year-old Joe Gibbs shared his thoughts on the new addition to the JGR shed and said:
"We are extremely excited about the future of our 19 team with Chase (Briscoe) behind the wheel and the partnership with Johnny, J.P. and everyone at Bass Pro Shops."
"We obviously do a lot of research before selecting our drivers and through the process, everything kept pointing us back to Chase. With James’ (Small) leadership, Chase behind the wheel, and the support from Bass Pro, and of course Toyota, we couldn’t be more excited about the future of our 19 team," Gibbs added.
As NASCAR heads toward the 19th race of the season at Nashville Superspeedway, #14 Briscoe currently sits at P16 in the overall Cup Series standings. He has two top-5s and six top-10 finishers so far, with a recent runner-up finish at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
