Social media users reacted to Bubba Wallace's $50,000 penalty after the incident with Alex Bowman during the Grant Park 165 in Chicago. He slammed his car into the latter, raging for an incident earlier in the race.
The street race in Chicago turned out to be a difficult one for the drivers as rain drenched the entire track. Multiple drivers exceeded the braking limits which saw cars being bumped into the barriers throughout the race. Alex Bowman shared a similar incident with Bubba Wallace.
On lap 25, the #48 Chevrolet locked up its wheels on the exit of turn 2 and rammed into the #23 of Wallace. Following this, the latter was left stranded on the track, parked parallelly. Bowman meanwhile, was able to continue in the race and managed to win.
Starting the race in P8, Wallace had a chance to finish within the top 10. However, he could only manage to get a P13 after the incident. Seemingly out of rage, he door-slammed his car into Bowman's on the cool-down lap. Analyzing the incident, NASCAR fined him $50,000.
Fans on social media had a different perspective on this penalty. Many felt that Chase Elliott, who shared a similar incident with Daniel Suarez, was not penalized. One fan said:
"Chase did the same thing where is his fine??"
"Same fine better get dished out to Elliott," another fan commented.
"Once again someone gets punished for something Chase Elliott is allowed to get away with," a fan argued.
"Embarrassing," another fan wrote.
Some fans also criticized Bubba Wallace for his actions during the race, commenting that he had enough time to think about it.
"Reminder Bubba had 2 hours to rethink and not do what he did to Bowman," a fan wrote.
"Bubba needs to cool his jets. I’ve seen passionate drivers over the years but Bubba gets a little too excited. Window nets were down.. Some self control is in order," another fan wrote.
What is Bubba Wallace's playoff picture after Chicago race?
12 different drivers have won a race so far this Cup Series season, leaving only four spots for drivers without a win to try and get into the playoffs based solely on points.
Bubba Wallace is yet to win a race this season, and he currently sits in 17th place, 45 points short of Chris Buescher who is right at the edge of the playoff qualification. With six races remaining, the chances for the 23XI Racing driver to make it to the playoffs seem to be dwindling.
Wallace earlier claimed that he had qualified for the playoffs without a victory and might as well aim to do the same, but a victory for him is preferable.
