Christopher Bell's crew chief Adam Stevens has opened up about his recent injury to both knees. He said the mishap occurred while trying to dive into a swimming pool from the diving board, trying to keep up with his 15-year-old son.
After over five years of working with Kyle Busch, Stevens parted ways at the end of the 2020 season. He would take on the crew chief role for Bell's #20 car. The Joe Gibbs Racing team recently announced that due to Stevens' knee injuries and subsequent surgery, Chris Sherwood would step in as the interim crew chief.
Delving into the details of his injury while speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Stevens recently said:
"I was just enjoying some downtime with the family. We ventured up to my hometown of Portsmouth, Ohio, to see some antinocles and cousins and people and family that I haven't got to see. We were swimming in the pool Sunday afternoon and taking turns jumping off the diving board with the nieces and nephews and my my kids and doing flips and just enjoying ourselves."
"I felt like my flips weren't quite as impressive as my 15-year-old son. I amped my game up a little bit and it was fine and you know another turn through the line and try a little harder and they were getting prettier. I just start a little too hard and loaded up a little bit too much on the end of the diving board and ruptured both my patellar tendons at the same time," he added.
Providing an update about his health, Stevens said [via Motorsport]:
"The surgery went well, and I will be back at the track in a few weeks."
Christopher Bell is gearing up for the upcoming race at Richmond
The Joe Gibbs Racing team has notched 19 wins at Richmond Raceway, with Denny Hamlin clinching one in March 2024. In over 171 starts, they've secured finishes in the top-5 61 times, hit the top-10 100 times, and led 6,364 laps.
Christopher Bell himself has a strong track record at Richmond, finishing in the top 6 in six of his last seven races. His best moment came in 2022 when he claimed second place. Looking ahead at the next race at Richmond on Sunday (August 11), Christopher Bell noted the introduction of an 'option' tire and shared his thoughts [via Motorsport]:
"Nobody is quite sure how it’s going to go, but I’m sure we will learn a lot in our practice session on Saturday."
Having already bagged three wins this season and secured a spot in the playoffs, Christopher Bell is on a mission to match Kyle Larson’s win tally, with just four races left until the playoffs.
