Connor Zilisch made the headlines again with his win at his Xfinity Series debut race at Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series Mission 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. The eighteen-year-old made history and became the seventh and second youngest driver to win a debut in the Xfinity Series.
Joey Logano from Team Penske still holds the record for the youngest driver to win a race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He won his first in 2008 at the age of 18 years and 21 days. On the other hand, Connor Zilisch surpassed Chase Elliott on the list by winning at 18 years, one month, and 23 days. Elliott was in second place before the official Red Bull athlete's latest win.
He even won the pole position at the race and dominated stage 1 of the race with his exceptional performance. Connor Zilisch outperformed Justin Allgaier and Cole Custer with a best time of 71.028 seconds. The teen sensation snuck his victory under everyone's noses by saving enough fuel to surpass everyone in the last stage of the race.
Chase Elliot—The Hendrick Motorsports driver was 18 years, four months, and seven days old when he won his first race in the 2014 Xfinity Series at the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 race held at the Texas Motor Speedway. He was part of JR Motorsports and drove a Chevrolet number #9 back then. He won back-to-back two races at that time.
AJ Allmendinger praised Connor Zilisch's performance at Watkins Glen
AJ Allmendinger, the Kaulig Racing team driver, finished in third place at the race. Later in a post-race interview, he expressed his thoughts about the teen sensation's latest win. Driver number #16 mentioned that the eighteen-year-old got a fast car, and to counterbalance the speed, he has phenomenal car control.
AJ further highlighted that he believes that Connor Zilisch is going to become the next superstar in NASCAR.
"He did a great job on all those restarts, everything he threw at him, but yeah, I mean, it's just he's got just phenomenal speed, and he's in a really good car, which also helps. But man, his talent. He's, as we've all seen, he's he's gonna be the next superstar," explained Allmendinger. [00:27]
The interviewer asked AJ about intimidating Zilisch, but AJ replied that he thought that he was not fast enough to intimidate Zilisch.
"I felt like even if I got around him, I was gonna have to hold on for dear life for two laps, because he could just roll so much more corner speed than I could in the center of the corners," stated Allmendinger. [00:53]
Driver number #16 explained Connor Zilisch didn't make any mistakes throughout the race; he was the fastest guy and did well on the restarts, so according to the 42-year-old, Zilisch deserved to win the race.
