Spire Motorsports Corey LaJoie finished the Talladega race in a very unconventional way this Sunday (April 21).
The #7 Chevy driver made the finish line, after getting caught up in last-lap mayhem on the Superspeedway. The chain reaction crash started by the front runners of the race involved a dozen other cars.
LaJoie's car got airborne after flipping when Carson Hocevar crashed into him. However, this momentum carried LaJoie sideways to the chequered flag.
In a post-race interview, the 32-year-old said:
"Um pretty wild ride just never could quite get it in the right spot the right time there at the end."
The Spire Racing #7 was delighted about the fact he tightened the seatbelts in the last few laps. He said:
"Then you just know you're just waiting to pile them up good thing I tug gave the belts an old good old tuggy with about three to go so I didn't bounce around too much um you know and didn't have a great day.
Lajoie added:
"I did a full rotation so I did like left side on the ground for a bit then it kind of stopped then it flipped over hit the roof and then landed on all fours and the all four hit was was pretty big so um glad glad I slipped past star finish line though so I to run past to that guy was Carl Edwards so at least I made it past star finish line.
"You're committed to the fuel and somebody gets into you and you just smash into somebody else and hit the wall and just hope that uh there's no catch friends in front of you or um you're not the one upside down but today I was the one upside down."
The chain-reaction crash that led to Corey LaJoie's bizarre finish
The NASCAR Cup Series GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway saw Tyler Reddick getting in on a sweet spot to avoid the crash by the race leader in the final lap of the race.
The wreckage that involved a dozen cars started as Michael McDowell blocked the runner-up Brad Keselowski of RFK Racing. McDowell didn't let Keselowski get ahead, which led the former to spin out off the bumper of Keselowski's Ford.
Several cars, including Corey LaJoie's Chevy, were caught in the wreck. This led to LaJoie's #7 getting underneath #4 of Josh Berry, forcing him to turn sideways onto the wall.
